Unravelling Relationships between In Vivo Effects on Plants and Detected Pesticide Mixtures in Freshwaters of a South-European Agro-Ecosystem

The multiple benefits agriculture provides to society depend on the long-term sustainable management of water resources, including preservation a good ecological and chemical status bodies. Presently, this has not been reached in majority European river basins. Implemented monitoring strategies are targeted identify presence magnitude impacts that come from mixtures chemicals but fail give information causes ecosystem disruptions. This work aims contribute assessing quality surface waters used for irrigation LGVFX agricultural area (Central Portugal) by applying non-conventional vivo phytotoxicity tests three primary producers, monocotyledon (Sorghum saccharatum) two dicotyledons (Lepidium sativum Sinapsis alba), complemented screening mixture-risk modelling with component-based methods (summation risk quotients) based classic concept concentration addition (CA). Although inhibition percentages parameter germination root shoot growth may be related pesticides, it was possible establish fingerprinting detected compounds observed biological effects, mostly due large gap ecotoxicological data terrestrial plants exposed contaminated water. In addition, pesticides can interact within plant, leading antagonism synergism phenomena.
